Accessibility roadmap
This roadmap shows what improvements we’ll make to our website over the next few months, and what improvements we've made recently. These improvements go beyond compliance with web accessibility standards, and follow best practice in accessible design.
We review this roadmap every month.
Accessibility improvements we'll make
Improving our website fonts
We know that there are more accessible fonts we could use on our website. We plan to investigate changing the font to something with more distinct letter shapes in July 2026.
Improving our ‘contact us’ form
We had planned improvements to our contact form by the end of June 2025 because:
- the ‘submit’ button text could be bigger
- it does not currently use our theme styling, which we’ve designed to be accessible
However, we were unable to make the form as accessible as we wanted to. We removed the form on 2 July 2025, but provided another way to contact us with better help text.
We will revisit this issue in September 2026.
Accessibility improvements we've already made
Preventing hover over links from creating movement
In June 2026, we realised that making our links change to bold on mouse hover meant that some text was moving when this happened. To fix it, we made links bold by default. This also makes them stand out more from surrounding text. This stops any text from moving on interaction.
Updating our accessibility statement to WCAG 2.2
We did some extra testing to ensure that our website meets the new and updated criteria in WCAG 2.2 on 11 May 2026, and updated our accessibility statement.
Fixing low contrast on mouse hover for links
On 22 August 2025 a friend told us that the mouse over hover state was showing links in light blue (#58b3d8). This failed WCAG success criterion 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum) with a contrast ratio of 2.26:1 against the site's background colour, and a huge oversight. We fixed this within 2 hours of finding out.
Fixing the low colour contrast heading on our 404 error page
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines success criterion 1.4.3 - contrast (minimum). The heading on our 404 page had a contrast ratio of 1.5:1 against the page background. There was an error with the page not accepting our theme styling. This was fixed on 22 April 2025.
Making links more easily distinguishable from body text
Links on our website were distinguishable by colour, mouse hover and focus state. We have also underlined links to make them more distinguishable from surrounding body text. This was done on 22 April 2025.
Adding a ‘skip to main content’ link
Our website did not have a link which allows users to skip to the main content rather than tab through or hear the header navigation bar on every page. To improve accessibility for site visitors using screen readers, keyboard or switch navigation, we added a ‘skip to content’ link on 23 April 2025. We originally added this as a permanent, visible link. Because the visible link affected how our site looked on mobile devices, we changed 'skip to content' to a hidden element until it receives focus.
Making fonts easier to see on mobile
The navigation menu for the mobile version of our website previously used thin fonts. We made it easier to read by changing it to thicker fonts (we used a heavier font weight) on 5 May 2025.
